Center have used satellite data for the first time to detect changes in the Earth's surface caused by a massive earthquake.

The discovery signifies a new use for the data from NASA's two gravity recovery and climate experiment (GRACE) satellites and might offer a new approach to understanding how earthquakes work, according to an August 3 press release from Ohio State University (OSU).

Read jolted the city at around 4:48am and 10:47am. The first measured 1.6 on the Richter scale and the other 3.6. Their intensity was too low to enable us to determine their exact location,” the director-general of the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Dr Qamaruzzam Chaudhry, told Dawn.

The tremors had also been felt in some phases of Defence and in localities around I.I. Chundrigar Road, he added.

He said the moderate earthquake, which measured 5.5 on the Richter scale, pummelled the region around Loralai in Balochistan at 7.17am. He said the epicentre of the earthquake was around 700km south-west of Peshawar, adding that it was also felt in Karachi. Three months later, an 8.7 magnitude quake erupted from the same fault line, killing more than 600 people on islands off Sumatra's west coast.

Adding to the jitters, a magnitude-6.4 earthquake struck the area Thursday, causing people to flee their homes but resulting in no damage, the state-run Antara news agency reported.

Earthquake rattled county

A 4.0 magnitude earthquake rattled the Southern San Diego County at 4:00 AM with its center at three miles east of Jamul and the 2.4 magnitude aftershock was recorded after couples of minutes.

New part of chain earthquake rocked Indonesa

A 6.8 magnitude on the richter scale rocked the Indonesia's Kepulauan Mentawai region Sunday, April 10,2005.
